Abstract

This research carried out types and strategies of flouting maxim as the object of the research. Grice (1975) theory of cooperative principles was used to identify the types of flouting maxims. Cutting (2002) theory of strategies was also used in this research in accordance to search out the strategies of flouting maxim. To conduct and analyze the object of the research, a movie entitled “Justice Society: World War II” was used as the data source. From that data source, the utterances of the characters were analyzed in order to achieve the aims. Since this research is descriptive, then the research design was qualitative. To collect the data, the method was observational and the technique was non-participatory by Sudaryanto. Furthermore, Pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence- in equalizing from Sudaryanto (2015) were applied to analyze the data in context. Next, to present the data, the method was informal. From this research, all types of flouting maxim and all strategies to flout the maxim were found. Type of flouting maxim that was done the most was flouting maxim of relevance. Manner type was the least to use. Next, strategy of being irrelevant was used the most with the total data 23. The least strategy to use was being not brief.
